I have the Sleep Number C2 Mattress, made by Select comfort, in Queen Size. It features adjustable air-chambers which can either inflate or deflate to change the firmness of the bed. These adjustable chambers function very well in the middle range, but when you set the mattress to full “soft”, it doesn’t have the same feel as a conventional soft mattress.

It takes on more of a “slushy” feel, more like a deflated water bed than a truly “soft” cushiony mattress. If you prefer the mattress towards the medium to firm settings, it works much better. I’ve also found that, once you determine the optimal setting for your personal needs, it’s not necessary to really make any adjustments.

For this reason, I feel that it would be possible to simply try out several standard mattresses, select the firmness and feel that you want, and simply save a few hundred dollars by giving up the adjustability, since you’re not likely to change it much after you have it dialled in. Again, be weary of this mattress if you prefer a very soft mattress, as the air-chambers may not feel right to you on the soft settings. If, however, you have the desire to change your mattress settings from time to time (for instance someone with occasional back problems, etc), then this mattress may be a good choice for you.

It’s not the cheapest, but it’s also reasonably priced considering that it is adjustable. Overall good comfort as long as you keep it set properly.
